Ode To A Deadbeat Dad

Ode To A Deadbeat Dad

You claim the name father,
Ha!
You are a gnat
and less than that.

For a father is a precious and beautiful creation

moldable
tender-hearted
self sacrificing

No, you are not worthy of that name-

try these:
coward
liar
malcontent
deceiver

Oh, now these do fit you well
They are not hidden from discerning eyes...
though you deceive many
wrapping yourself in lies
and a toothy grin-
grotesque.

There is One who sees all.
Who is merciful, mighty and more

But it is Him you abhor
along with all who bear His name.

Clinging to hate and death
your anger fuels your insignificance
You need to lay blame...
somewhere.

Convenience serves those who bow to lesser gods -
idols and fools serve you well
in the place you dwell

but as for me
I will trust
He who guarantees safe passage
and suffers fools for only a season.

"Since they didn't bother to acknowledge God, God quit bothering them and let them run loose. And then all hell broke loose: rampant evil, grabbing and grasping, vicious backstabbing. They made life hell on earth with their envy, wanton killing, bickering, and cheating. Look at them: mean-spirited, venomous, fork-tongued God-bashers. Bullies, swaggerers, insufferable windbags! They keep inventing new ways of wrecking lives. They ditch their parents when they get in the way. Stupid, slimy, cruel, cold-blooded. And it's not as if they don't know better. They know perfectly well they're spitting in God's face. And they don't care—worse, they hand out prizes to those who do the worst things best!"
Romans 1:28-32 The Message

Linking up with my favorite place to
be poetic and visit other wonderful poetry links:
"In the end, that’s why we’re drawn to write,
I think, to chronicle, in our own ways,
the adventures and tales of our lives and worlds that matter,
so they won’t be forgotten,
and like the characters in them,
it really isn’t something we choose–
it’s just the job we know we must do,
and we can’t turn back if we want to do it right."

  1. a father carries such a big responsibility and it always breaks my heart when they misuse their authority and break the soul of those entrusted to them.. good on pointing to that father who's merciful, loving and just..

    1. Yes, Claudia- we all have a Father we can turn to who is Faithful and True.

  2. Thank God for the One who came to reclaim the word that such humans have emptied for many of us. While He doesn't fix the pain of that human relationship, He does show us what a REAL Father can/should be. And who He is to each of us. Still, though I don't carry the sadness of having such a dad, there's a similar word in me about a a difficult mom...

    1. Yes, Carolyn- he is a faithful teacher and friend. Although this Ode is to all/any of those who fit the description (if the shoe fits they know)- it was really written for one specific person. I feel I should additionally mention it is not about my own Dear Dad, who although I met later in life I love and adore. It is to the many "dads" who are, and to the one "dad" God knows I write about.

    1. I know, sorry Brian. I am married to a great example of sacrificial love for his daughter. My own Dad and FIL are also great examples of dedicated dads. No one is perfect but there are too many who refuse to own up to the name they claim for their own convenience.

  4. Have you heard the saying, Any man can become a father, but it takes a special man to be a dad. A dad is there when the child needs him. He is there when the mother needs ecnouragement from him.

I'm listening, friend...in November I will not be replying so often, but instead slip quietly over to your place for a visit. ;)
